Dog Adoptions Save a Life!

puppy rescue adoption

Consider dog adoption centres if you are thinking of bringing a pet into your life or family. Not convinced whether adopting a dog from a rescue shelter is right for you?  There are many reasons to bring home a puppy from a rescue shelter least of which is that you could be saving a life and giving a dog a second chance.

Knowing your choices ensures you find the right dog for you and your family's lifestyle.

Rescue shelters provide a safe environment and care until the right person or family comes along. Many of the dog adoption centres are non profit organisations funded by donations so they can care for homeless dogs. Their staff and many volunteers are dedicated people who love animals and will do their best to match you up with the right dog. Animal shelters usually have puppies, mature dogs and purebreds to select from and will allow people to spend time with a dog before adopting.

Dog pounds and animal refuges are full of wonderful pets just waiting for someone to rescue them. The best thing of all is knowing you have given a dog a second chance and in some cases saved a dog’s life. By adopting a dog you can have the wonderful experience with a canine friend that thousands of dog owners already enjoy.

The advantages of adopting a puppy or mature dog from a dog adoption centre or dog rescue group are many. The dogs will be spayed or neutered already before adoption. Dogs are health checked and a temperament evaluation performed. The fee paid to the SPCA, ASPCA, RSPCA and other rescue shelters include all of this. The shelter staff are usually very knowledgeable about the animals in their care and are willing to help you find the right dog.

Not in a position to adopt a dog at this time? Consider contacting your local rescue shelter about their Foster Programs for dogs. School holidays, Easter and Christmas are very busy times for many shelters. They are always looking for long term, casual and weekend carers to assist.

Adopt a Shelter dog when you are ready for your next family pet

If you can't adopt - foster. If you can't foster - sponsor. If you can't sponsor - volunteer. If you can't volunteer - donate. If you can't donate - educate, network and crosspost. EVERYONE can do something, large or small to help save a shelter dog or other animals.

Have you heard of Puppy Sit? Love dogs but can't commit to pet ownership? Why not be a puppy sitter. Assistance Dogs Australia need sitters when their puppy raisers are on holiday. All major expenses are paid, such as food, vet bills, heartworm and flea control, and you can enjoy being part of a group and learn dog-training skills. To be considered, ideally you should not be working full time, have no children under school age, have a suitable secure yard and be willing to have an inside dog. Visit Assistance Dogs Australia for more information.

Fundraising is another great way of getting involved with your local rescue shelter and helping. Check out these fundraising ideas to get you started.

Remember that dogs and other pets can't do a lot of things for themselves and that they depend on you!

1 My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2 Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3 Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4 Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5 Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6 Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7 Before you hit me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8 Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in
the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9 Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10 On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there,
because I love you so.
Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them.

Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without our pets.
