Boxer
Description The Boxers background originated in Germany where this courageous hunting dog with a mastiff type head and undershot bite was used to secure a tenacious hold on bull, bear or boar pending the hunters arrival. Following that they progressed through periods of being a utility dog for peasants and shop-owners and when they discovered how easy they were to train they also performed in circuses. In the 1880s descendants of this type were bred to a taller, more elegant English import, often white in colour.
Temperament Said to be the eternal puppy, it wants to meet you, your children and other members of the family because of its strong characteristic trait for human affection. With their striking appearance and arresting beauty these dogs are bright, friendly, brave and are renowned for their great love and faithfulness to their master and household. This highly desirable family dog and cheerful companion is very clean.
Appearance Height: 53-63cm (21-25in) Weight: 24-32kg (53-70lb) Group: Working Dogs
The tallest of the Brach cephalic breeds, which are distinguished by their short faces such as Pugs and Bulldogs. With their sleek, smooth coat in colours of red and brindle with white markings.
Grooming This is a low maintenance breed with weekly wipe over with a mitt being recommended and bathing as required. Nails must be trimmed regularly unless worn down by activity on hard or cement surfaces and tartar from their teeth may have to be removed periodically - usually by a veterinarian.
Life Expectancy 10-12 Years
Health Concerns Cancer is a common problem for this breed as are skin tumors, however many of these end up being harmless.
Suitability The ever popular Boxer can be over-enthusiastic and headstrong and require firm, consistent discipline, therefore obedience training is recommended. As their playful attitude will not respond positively to harsh words, patience will be needed with puppies. Primarily companion dogs they make good family dogs for people with teenagers as children less than 8-10 years may find the dogs too boisterous. A secure backyard with high fences is strongly recommended as some Boxers are excellent jumpers and a daily walk of 30 minutes is ideal for these energetic dogs.
