Sloughi

Description
It is
speculated that the Sloughi originally came from the Orient or from what
is today Ethiopia and is a sighthound. On old fragments of earthenware a
short-haired sighthound with lop ears was discovered. They are still
used for hunting and also make a very reliable guard dog.
Temperament
They are a sensitive
natured yet alert and intelligent hound. A Sloughi is
faithful and are easy to bring up and train.
Appearance
Height: 61-72cm
(24-72in)
Weight: 16-30kg
(35-65lbs)
The
breed is a short-haired, middle-sized, strong sighthound with drooping
ears and bears an expression which is often described as melancholy.
The overall
impression is of a racy but delicate dog. The coat is smooth and fine.
Colours are fawn or sable in all shades, also seen as brindle, white or
black with tan points. The nose is black or dark brown.
Grooming
Because it is a
desert hound, they need protection in cold and wet weather and as it has
very short hair with no undercoat it has no "doggy odor" unless it's
wet. They are an average shedder and dirt and mud will fall off by
itself when the fur dries. Grooming is relatively easy as a rubber brush
or grooming glove will remove dead hairs. It is interesting to note
that several people have reported that they are good for people with
mild cases of dog allergy.
Life Expectancy
10-15 Years
Health Concerns
They
tend to enjoy excellent health into old age. Only a few genetic
conditions have been noted in the breed, in particular Progressive
Retinal Atrophy and fortunately this condition can be tested for with a
small blood sample.
Suitability
Indoors they are
calm and quiet
however these hounds have a longing for exercise also. Aloof with
strangers but affectionate towards its owner.
They prefer to have a nice comfortable place to sleep and will not be
very happy on a hard cold floor or outdoors.
