Samoyed

Description
The Samoyed was originally used for hunting, herding
reindeer and hauling sledges for the Samoyede tribe in north western
Siberia which was where this dog derived its name. Being very placid in
temperament these are dogs of great beauty and lived closely with their
owners as family members where they developed a great understanding of
mankind and as guardians of their children. They were introduced to
England at the latter end of the 19th century. These dogs were also
used to haul sledges on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions however, have
adapted well to the warmer climates and nowadays prefer to live their
life as companion dogs and part of a family, rather than live in a
kennel environment.
Temperament
They love nothing more than being part of the family and to
live its life as a family member rather than being a kennel dog. This
very amenable breed has a steady, kind disposition and will play the
role of protector of all children. Needing to spend a lot of time with
people, they enjoy interacting with humans and are not over-active like
many large dogs can be. As with most dogs they get highly excitable when
the family first arrives home, running around greeting everyone with
great joy, then after 5-10 minutes they will settle down.
Appearance
Height: 53-57cm
(20-22in)
Weight: 17-32kg
(37-65lb)
This graceful working dog is strong and active with a heavy
and weather-resistant coat giving the appearance of being capable of
great endurance. They only come in one colour and that is the purest
form of white.
Grooming
Compared to breeds with silky coats which knot up easily,
the Samoyed has an easy care coat which should be brushed and combed
thoroughly once a week, taking around 30 – 40 minutes. Regular bathing
is not necessary as long as the coat is groomed on a regular basis
however, if the coat does becomes dirty, allowing it to dry first before
brushing will allow the dirt will come off very easily. Ensure that
their nails are regularly filed or cut short, and consult your vet
regarding dental hygiene and cleaning.
If you don't have the
time to bath or groom your dog, your local dog grooming
salon provides these services.
Life Expectancy
14 Years
Health Concerns
Provided you feed them good quality dry dog food combined
with either raw or cooked meat your dog should live a long healthy life
with very few health problems provided you do not allow it to become
overweight.
Suitability
This
dog is quite vigilant and requires lots of exercise and because they
naturally like to wander it would be advisable to ensure your garden is
properly fenced. The Samoyed is a gentle-natured and patient dog with
children but tends to be rather dominant towards their own kind. As the
Samoyed is a hunting dog it does enjoy chasing something if given the
chance so social training with cats and other pets therefore would be
very important.
