Lhasa Apso
Description The Lhasa Apso is known for the bringer of good luck by the ancestors of Lhasas and Shih Tzus Buddhist monks in both Tibet and neighboring Bhutan. This little fellow was kept by the monks to act as sentinel of their monasteries and has been treated with great seriousness and respect for centuries resulting in an attitude this dog expects from those around it in the modern world today.
Temperament The breed can definitely be known as a barker and can at times come across quite pushy and opinionated with its owners especially when it comes to obedience training. Because of its cuteness and self-confidence it knows it can get away with it too. Possessing a big personality and being very independent it can be very demanding as this is no lap dog and doesn’t really want to be one either.
Appearance Height: 25.5-28cms (10-12in) Weight: 6-10kg (13-22lbs) Group: Utility Dogs Its coat is long, profuse and dense with a moderately thick undercoat and comes in the variety of colours of gold, sand, grizzle, slate, smoke grey, black and including multicolored.
Grooming Get your grooming equipment ready this little fellow with his long, heavy and thick coat will be a challenge to keep clean and tidy especially with his attitude which tells you that grooming really isn’t high on his list of priorities. Even though show dogs wear their hair over their eyes, it is highly recommended that the hair be kept away from the eyes to improve sight and awareness of what is around. If you don't have the time to bath or groom your dog, your local dog grooming parlour provides these services.
Life Expectancy Expect to have this fun little fellow around for approximately 13-14 years
Health Known for health problems such as hip dysplasia and liver disease this dog also suffers from the occasional Dry Eye, apart from that there are few known inherited problems.
Suitability Excellent for city dwellers requiring moderate exercise and not requiring large open areas of land to frolic on. Because the Lhasa Apso can lack patience it may not be suitable around small children and the owner needs to establish from the very beginning who is in charge.
