Great Dane Feel Good Story
by TRICIA SULLENS
Our Great Dane
I would like to take a few minutes and tell you about our dogs – actually our two Great Danes. A couple of years ago I fell and broken my right ankle bad enough that it had to be surgically repaired – plates and screws. After surgery, I was delegated to our couch for two weeks. Once I was up and moving on crutches, I was once again caring for our dogs. It took time, but they were very patient with me. One evening, after taking care of the dogs, I had gone down to the den to bring them in for the evening. To get to the main part of the house from the den, I had to bring them up 4 steps. Keep in mind, I was on crutches with one of those large black medical boots. Once we were all gathered in the den, I put my crutches together on my right side and started my way up the steps one at a time. Before I knew it, our very large black and white male was standing on my left and leaning into me to support me. Our Harlequin Female came up from behind and placed her head in the small of my back and together the three of us made our way up the steps one step at a time. My husband looked up, smiled, and asked if the dogs were bringing me in from the den. Of course they were. Once we were at the top of the stairs, our male Great Dane went into the living room and laid down, but only after he was sure I was okay, and, our female Great Dane took her place and stayed with me for a few more steps. For those of us with pets, it just doesn’t get any better than that. They just seem to know so much more than we do.
