English Cocker Spaniel

Description

The English Cocker Spaniel is also known as the "Merry Cocker". This adorable breed has a happy disposition and closely resembles its American cousin the American Cocker Spaniel.

Temperament

They are friendly, intelligent , adaptable, loyal and affectionate.

Appearance

Weight: 28-34 lb (13-15kg)

Height: 17 inches (43cm) in height.

Group: Gundog

They come in a number of colours from black, tan, black and white, tricolour (black, white and tan), silver, chocolate, copper red, gold, apricot and in variations of all these colours.  The coat is smooth, silken and medium length.

Grooming

Requiring a moderate amount of care grooming, it is important to keep their coat clean and free of knots at all times and is easily done by daily brushing and bathing once a week. Basic trimming to be undertaken on a regular basis, including the cutting of nails, removal of excess hair around ear passages, removal of hair between the pads and around the feet.  If you don't have the time to bath or groom your Cocker Spaniel, your local  dog grooming parlour provides these services. 

Life Expectancy

11 to 12 years.

Health Concerns

Common health issues are skin allergies, cataracts, deafness and benign tumours.

Suitability:

Their temperament makes the English Cocker Spaniel a good medium-sized family pet. This breed is loyal and affectionate and bond very well with family members.  They make an ideal companion dog.  They usually get along with other pets.  This breed needs regular exercise.
