Dog Adoption - Jake
Jake Beagle/chocolate Labrador mix
I had just moved out of my parents' house and I was thinking of getting a pet. I didn't know what I wanted yet. Eventually I went to the local animal shelter. I was shown around. Each dog I saw I liked, but they all were missing something. I thought I'd go to another shelter, but at the very end of the row of pens in the last room, I saw him.
I asked what kind of dog he was. I was told he was a beagle/chocolate lab mix. He was abused and left to die when the old owners moved out. He had lots of scars and he had one eye. He wagged his tail a few times, but stayed in the corner of his pen. I said I wanted him. I had to wait a few days to pick him up.
I found out he'd been in the shelter for two years. His name was Devon. He had his neuter surgery. I took him home. He slept on the bed with me and went on car rides and loved playing with the neighbor's Chihuahua, Gypsy. But one day I let him out to go to the bathroom. The gate was open and he ran. I worried about him for days.
I called everybody in the neighborhood and I put up posters. After two weeks I got a call late at night. It was a woman. She said they found my dog and we made plans for me to get him in the morning.
I showed up early in the morning. A man, woman, and two girls about 8 or 9 were out in the yard with him. The girls were playing with him. I called for him and he ran to me. I hugged him. I was about to put him in the car when I saw the girls' faces. They were crying and calling for him, calling him Jake.
I knew I couldn't take him. He liked it better with them. I said bye to him. Told him to be good to the family. He became part of their family.
I do still miss him, and occasionally I babysit the girls and get to see him. I'm about to adopt a Saint Bernard named Bernie.
