Dedication - Abbey the Whippet

by Monika
(Australia)

Abbey had that way of looking at you

Abbey had that way of looking at you

I saw the ad in the paper and made the call. The person on the phone bred and showed Whippets and had only one puppy 16 weeks old which was for sale (she wasn't up to show standards I was told). I couldn't get into the car quick enough to go and have a look as I have wanted a Whippet as a pet for such a very long time. When I saw her, she was all legs, but oh so very beautiful and then she looked up at me and slowly wagged her tail, my heart just melted. Instantly I knew she was mine. She curled herself up onto the front seat of the car and home we went. Abbey turned out to be my constant companion, she was so gentle and refined and I couldn't wait to get home from work everyday as I knew she would be at the gate peeping through the gaps waiting to get the first glimpse of me turning up the driveway.
We were a very familiar sight in our neighbourhood going on our daily walks and Abbey would walk so close to me that I used to feel her brushing up against my leg as we walked. She had this air of elegance about her and people would constantly stop us to pat her. One day someone stopped me and told me that when they saw us walking past everyday they had noticed that Abbey was always looking up at me as we walked and they could see how much she was dedicated to me. Abbey was a very healthy dog and never got sick, but sadly at the age of 8 she got terminal lymphatic Cancer and she passed away. Abbey made a very big impression on my life, was always there for me and taught me alot about love I will never forget her........this is my dedication to her.
