Collie
Description The Collie was made popular in the 1860’s when Queen Victoria fell in love with the breed. Originating from the Highlands of Scotland and Northern England and used extensively as a herding dog.
Temperament These great family dogs are gentle, loving, sensitive, intelligent, trustworthy and loyal. They are relatively easy to train and are used widely as service dogs for people with disabilities. The true Collie temperament should never include traits such as fearfulness, nervousness or shyness, however unfortunately many factors have combined to make these traits all too common in them today.
Appearance Height: 56-66cm (22-26in) Weight: 23-34kg (50-75lb) This breed is perhaps the most beautiful of all breeds and displays great beauty and elegance. There are two types, defined by their coats: rough and smooth with the only difference being the length of the coat. The rough variety has a dense, straight, coarse outer coat and a soft, furry undercoat and the smooth variety is without the coarse outer coat. Their three main colours consist of: sable and white, tri-colour (predominantly black and white with tan markings about the head and legs) and blue merle (clear silvery blue splashed with marbled black and tan markings).
Grooming They do not seem to possess that distinct doggie odour that many breeds give off and there will not require frequent bathing and grooming contrary to popular belief. The grooming in particular will depend on the type of coat your dog has during the course of the year as they shed their coat. Usually combing out behind the ears, the feathering on the legs and under the front and back legs once a week will be sufficient and a complete thorough grooming is only required every month. It is also recommended to check regularly between the toes and in the coat for prickles or burrs if that is a problem in your area.
Life Expectancy 12-14 Years
Health Concerns They are prone to a hereditary eye problem called Collie Eye Anomaly that can cause blindness in one or both eyes and because of its long narrow muzzle, if lacking in pigment can be prone to sunburn and may require the application of sun block on this area. It is always interesting to note that not all heartworm medications are safe for them, so it would be advisable to check with your local veterinarian which medication would be suitable. Suitability A great companion for young and old, they love to go for walks or play ball and make great couch potatoes. Because of their great love for people they should never be forced to live permanently alone outside as they will be totally miserable.
