American Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Description Unfortunately the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has undeservedly been given the reputation for being bloodthirsty and cruel. However that is deserved more by its past history. Consequently, careful training and firm control are most important.
Temperament These happy dogs are forever wagging their tails; they are playfully affectionate with their family, robust, quiet, cheerful, athletic and love energetic exercise. They possess unlimited energy and excellent judgment and require an owner who can control it.
Appearance Height: 41-47cm (17-19in) Weight: 18-23kg (40-50lb) Group: Terriers The Staffy has a short and sleek coat and in a variety of colours such as red, fawn, white, black, blue, or brindle; with or without white markings. They are medium sized, muscular, strong and powerfully built with thigh and jaw muscles that look like the result of steroid abuse.
Grooming Grooming is quite minimal and if given regular baths as required, nail clipping and the occasional brush to remove loose hair, you will be left with plenty of extra time to take him for lots of walks.
Life Expectancy Around 10 years
Health An interesting fact is that this dog is less pain-sensitive than many others but is prone to hip dysplasia and tumors. If the male is kept intact they are more at risk of developing prostate enlargement and even prostatic cancer.
Suitability As lovable as their smiling faces, they do their best with experienced owners, who have time and patience for the essential obedience training and they think the most important part of their job description is pulling on the lead.
